Het pand had vooral een belangrijke functie als woonhuis<br>\nvoor de opziener van Rijnland. Bekende waterstaatkundigen als Cruquius,<br>\nBrunings en Conrad hebben in dit huis gewoond. Daarnaast was er ruimte voor een<br>\nreparatiewerkplaats en opslag voor dijkmaterialen.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin-top: 2rem; margin-bottom: 2rem;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; font-family: Roboto;\">Juist<br>\ndaar, vlak bij de steeds bedreigde Spaarndammerdijk, de zwakste schakel in de<br>\nzeewering, moest het hoogheemraadschap kunnen beschikken over de permanente<br>\naanwezigheid van materialen en werklieden die onmiddellijk ter plaatse waren,<br>\nals de zeearm, het IJ, bij stormweer hoog opliep. Na de afsluiting van het IJ<br>\nin 1872 en de aanleg van het Noordzeekanaal, in 1876, hoefde het klokje op het<br>\ngemeenlandshuis niet meer te luiden om de mannen van Spaarndam op te roepen om<br>\nde dijk twee aan twee over een strekking van 500 meter te bewaken.
